Agia Paraskevi<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Church of Agia Paraskevi, patron saint of Chomori, was built around 1883. To raise it, our forefathers dismantled the small chapel of Agios Charalambos at the old cemetery, reusing its stones and supplementing them with masonry from an earlier church of Agia Paraskevi. Thus arose the temple we see today, a testimony to both faith and perseverance. Behind the sanctuary stands its iconic bell tower, erected in 1928 by Dimitrios Lymperis in memory of his mother. The church itself follows the style of a basilica without a dome, a design that, together with the church of Panagia Kavadiotissa, shaped the architecture of all other local churches. In 1955, the interior was beautifully restored thanks to the generosity of benefactors Dimitrios Lymperis and Dimitrios Papacharalambous.<\/p>\n

Local lore adds a lively chapter to its story: villagers, weary after the exhausting labor of constructing the old schoolhouse (today\u2019s caf\u00e9), were reluctant to contribute further work for the church. Seeing this, Taxiarchis Grivas and Hatzomitros staged a mock quarrel, firing shots into the air as though in a furious dispute. The commotion stirred the entire village; everyone rushed to the site, and soon, swept up in the excitement, they all joined once more in the collective effort.<\/p>\n

Each year on July 26th, the feast of Agia Paraskevi is celebrated with great splendor. Chomorites from every corner of Greece and the diaspora return to honor her memory, filling the village with prayer, song, and reunion.<\/p>\n

Panagia Kavatiodissa<\/strong><\/h3>\n

At the southeastern edge of the village, perched on a rugged plateau of wild beauty, stands the monastery of Panagia Kavadiotissa. To the south, east, and west it is embraced by steep, rocky slopes thick with oaks and acacias, while to the north and northwest stretch fields and gardens\u2014an area of ten acres that, according to an 1834 valuation report, formed the estate of the monastery.<\/p>\n

The exact date of its founding remains unknown. The dedicatory inscription embedded in the Katholikon<\/em> (main church) has been scarred by bullets of uncertain origin. Yet, judging from the year 1725 inscribed on the icons of Christ and the Virgin on the carved wooden iconostasis, it is likely that the monastery was established in the early 18th century. Surviving documents, such as the 1770 deed of sale for the forest-meadow of Varenos\u2014signed by Hieromonk Dionysios, sacristan of the Great Lavra\u2014further attest to its long life.<\/p>\n

The Katholikon<\/em>, a basilica without a dome, measures 10.3 by 6.3 meters and was rebuilt in 1831 by Abbot Kyrillos \u201cout of his own means and family estate,\u201d after the earlier lime-built church suffered heavy damage during the War of Independence. Its gilded wooden iconostasis, richly adorned with floral carvings, shelters icons of the 18th century. On the icon of the Virgin and Child is inscribed: \u201cBy the hand of Diamantis of Morea, 1725.\u201d<\/em> The icon of the Dormition of the Virgin is a particularly striking composition, vibrant and full of figures. In 1815, Kyrillos also built the two-story Abbot\u2019s House, as recorded in an inscription dated 1819. The monks of Kavatiotissa lived not in a strict communal order but in separate cells and huts, each maintaining a measure of independence.<\/p>\n

The monastery, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, celebrates its feast on August 15th. Tradition holds that the icon of the Virgin came from the village of Kavadas in the Thessalian Agrafa; another version traces the epithet Kavadiotissa<\/em> to the local name \u201cstou Kavada,\u201d linked to Dimitrios Kavadas, a Chomorite recorded in Ottoman tax registers of 1454\/55. Following the Royal Decree of 1833 that dissolved many monasteries, Kavadiotissa too was abolished. In 1844, the villagers of Proschio petitioned the Parliament to reopen it, but their plea went unanswered. Like other monasteries, it had once held considerable property\u2014gifts and endowments of the faithful\u2014but much of its wealth was plundered during the Revolution, while its lands were later leased out.<\/p>\n

Among its dependencies were the chapel of Saint John the Theologian at Varenos and that of Agia Triada near Chomori. Varenos, lying between the villages of Eleftheriani and Podos, had fields, houses, and its own church; after the dissolution of Kavatiotissa, it passed to the monastery of Ampelakiotissa. In Agia Triada, west of Chomori, tradition remembers a Byzantine-era monastery destroyed during Ottoman times, later serving as a dependency of Kavatiotissa. Many of its sacred relics were dispersed after 1833\u2014some to the monasteries of Proussos and Ampelakiotissa, others to the parish church of Chomori. In June 1834, petitions from Chomorites and from the nearby village of Ano Chora requested that the relics of Saint Charalambos and Saint John the Merciful be kept in their churches, though these efforts bore no fruit.<\/p>\n

Today, the monastery\u2019s church opens its doors but once a year, on August 15th. Yet when it does, throngs of the faithful gather from surrounding villages, filling the rocky hilltop with prayer, incense, and the echo of hymns.<\/p>\n

Agios Konstantinos<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The chapel of Saint Konstantinos rises at 880 meters, perched on a ridge along the southeastern slopes of Mount Ardinis. It stands in a setting of breathtaking natural beauty\u2014surrounded by plane trees, firs, acacias, and oaks, where the mountain air is crisp and alive with birdsong. Built in 1934, as a marble inscription on its wall attests, the chapel quickly became a cherished landmark of faith and gathering.<\/p>\n

In earlier times, on May 21st, the villagers would ascend on foot to honor the saint. After the service, the day would unfold into a grand festival around the chapel, filled with music, laughter, and the aroma of food shared among families and friends. The elders still recall with emotion that on May 21st, 1966, nearly forty Chomorites set off from this very spot, bound for foreign lands in search of a new life.<\/p>\n

During the 1990s, the chapel also came alive on July 20th, for the feast of Prophet Elias, guardian of the mountain peaks. Villagers would take the narrow footpath early in the morning, pause to quench their thirst at the aqueduct, and continue upwards for the liturgy beneath the summer sky.<\/p>\n

Today, a forest road, branching off near the hollow of Agios Thodoros, makes the chapel accessible by car. Once a year, on the Sunday closest to the May feast day, Saint Konstantinos opens its doors again, and the faithful gather to keep the tradition alive\u2014linking past and present in the shadow of Ardinis.<\/p>\n

Agios Athanasios<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Saint Athanasios stands guard over the village from the south, built atop a hill at 660 meters in the lower neighborhood of Chomori, known as Englezeika or Kato Mahalas. From this vantage point, one enjoys a panoramic view of the village itself, the towering Ardinis, the rugged Xerovouni, and the fertile valley of Kotsalos. From here, the gaze also reaches the settlement of Agia Triada, while a path descends toward the river, weaving together the sacred and the natural landscape.<\/p>\n

Though the precise date of its construction remains unknown, written sources tell us that on June 13th, 1829, the Fathers of nearby monasteries and several prominent figures from the surrounding villages gathered at Saint Athanasios to discuss the educational matters of their time. Thus, the small chapel became not only a place of prayer but also a beacon of collective thought and decision-making.<\/p>\n

The first major renovation was carried out in 1961 by the great benefactor Dimitrios Papacharalambous, as recorded on a marble inscription above the entrance. More recently, in 2022, the chapel was lovingly restored once again and reopened for worship thanks to the contributions of fellow villagers Dimitrios I. Zamparas and Christos K. Englezos. The following year, in 2023, a pavilion was built on the threshing floor below the chapel, funded jointly by the neighborhood\u2019s residents and the Cultural Association\u2014offering shade, gathering space, and continuity to a centuries-old tradition of community life.<\/p>\n

Perched above the village\u2019s playing field stands the chapel of Saint Fanourios, a votive offering built in the year 2000 by Dimitrios I. Zamparas in memory of his father, Ioannis Zamparas. The land on which it rises had earlier been dedicated by Kostas L. Patouchas to Saint Charalambos, and so the chapel bears the names of both saints, uniting two devotions under a single roof.<\/p>\n

It is the newest guardian of Chomori, watching over the western entrance of the village with quiet grace.
